Dear visitors, I would now like to introduce you to Andoz Castle, located in the Espiye district of Giresun, in a commanding position overlooking the Black Sea coastline and the Yağlıdere Valley. Holding a significant place in Espiye’s historical heritage, this castle was built atop a naturally defensible rocky hill near the point where the Yağlıdere Stream meets the sea. Its location offers a vantage point for monitoring both the coastline and the routes extending along the valley. These features suggest that the castle may have served to control the surrounding area and detect potential threats in advance. History and historical significance There are differing views regarding the history of Andoz Castle. While some official sources estimate its construction to date back to around 1300 BC, there is no inscription confirming the exact date the structure was built. However, an academic study published in 2024 suggests that the castle may have been in use during the Middle Ages—specifically the 13th and 14th centuries—under the Empire of Trebizond (Komnenos). Consequently, the castle's original construction date remains unknown. Its strategic location, which historically enabled the surveillance of coastal transit routes and the Yağlıdere Valley, makes Andoz Castle significant in terms of the region's defensive history. Architectural features The castle was constructed by utilizing the natural contours of the sloping, rocky terrain. Rubble stone was used in its construction, with the stones bound together by mortar. The entrance to the structure, which features a roughly rectangular layout, is guarded by two semicircular bastions. These bastions, situated along the ramparts, are key architectural elements that bolster the fortress's defensive capabilities. Additionally, the site contains the remains of a rectangular, vaulted structure on the eastern side and an area identified as a water cistern within the walls. These remains suggest that the complex was designed not merely for surveillance of the surrounding area but also to meet various needs associated with defensive operations. Conservation efforts and current status Andoz Castle suffered damage over the years due to the elements and the passage of time; however, between 1997 and 1998, restoration and improvement works were carried out, including landscaping, the construction of access stairs, and the repair of the ramparts. The castle was officially registered as a protected site on November 30, 1990. Furthermore, the surrounding natural area was designated as a "Qualified Natural Conservation Area" in 2021. Today, the castle stands as a valuable cultural heritage site for visitors wishing to learn about Espiye’s past, observe historic defensive architecture firsthand, and explore the Black Sea coastal landscape from a unique perspective. Access and visitor information Andoz Castle is located within the Sakarya Neighborhood of the Espiye district, approximately 32 kilometers from the Giresun city center. According to the Culture Portal, the distance between the castle and the Espiye district center is approximately 2 kilometers. Access to the castle is possible via a route and footpath approaching from the north. I recommend wearing comfortable, non-slip walking shoes for your visit, bearing in mind that the terrain may be sloped. When you arrive, pay attention not only to the remains of the walls but also to the rocky hill where the fortress stands and the view of the surrounding valley; for one of the best ways to grasp the historical significance of Andoz Castle is to observe firsthand why it was built at this specific location in the past.
