Militia Lieutenant Colonel Topal Osman Ağa Mausoleum

I would now like to introduce you to the Memorial Tomb of Militia Lieutenant Colonel Topal Osman Ağa, located at the highest point of Giresun Castle. This tomb is a significant landmark that honors the memory of Osman Ağa, a key figure in Giresun’s history during the National Struggle. Topal Osman Ağa played a vital role in the region's defense by organizing volunteer units in Giresun during the years of the National Struggle, and later participated in the War of Independence with the 42nd and 47th Volunteer Regiments. Having served during the Battle of Sakarya and the Great Offensive, he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in recognition of his distinguished service. Osman Ağa passed away in Ankara in 1923; his remains were brought to Giresun and initially interred next to Kurban Dede within the castle grounds. In 1925, his tomb was relocated to its current site—one of the most beautiful spots in the castle, offering a commanding view of the city and the sea. When visiting this site, we encounter not merely a memorial tomb, but a testament to Giresun’s sacrifices during the National Struggle and the city’s historical legacy. At the same time, the castle’s elevated position offers visitors the opportunity to take in views of Giresun city center and the Black Sea.
