Located amidst lush greenery in Trabzon's Soğuksu district, the Atatürk Pavilion is one of the city's most important historical and cultural structures. Built in the late 19th century as a summer residence by Konstantin Kabayanidis, a wealthy banker from Trabzon, the pavilion boasts a commanding position overlooking the city. Its opulent design reflects the influences of European and Western Renaissance architecture. The pavilion's elegant decorations, spacious balconies, towers, and gardens are significant details that reflect the architectural sensibilities of the era.
One of the most important chapters in the pavilion's history during the Republican era began with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's visits to Trabzon. Atatürk visited Trabzon three times during the Republican period, in 1924, 1930, and 1937. During his first visit in 1924, he was hosted at the pavilion but did not stay overnight. During his second visit in 1930, Atatürk was again a guest at the pavilion and was very pleased with its natural beauty and atmosphere.
The most significant period in the mansion's history was Atatürk's visit to Trabzon in 1937. During this final visit to Trabzon on June 10, 1937, Atatürk stayed at the mansion for two nights. During this visit, the mansion became not only a place where Atatürk stayed, but also a witness to one of the most important decisions in the history of the Republic of Turkey. Here, Atatürk made the decision to donate all his assets to the Turkish nation, preparing a list of his assets and sending it to the Prime Minister for necessary action.
Following Atatürk's death, the mansion was renovated to preserve his memory in Trabzon and opened to the public as a museum in 1943. Today, the mansion displays some of Atatürk's belongings, photographs, and various artifacts reflecting the life of that era. The rooms of the building are also arranged to reflect the characteristics of the period. The ground floor contains living, relaxation, dining, and guest rooms; the first floor houses study and bedrooms, as well as meeting and waiting rooms; and the upper floor contains smaller rooms.
Today, Atatürk Mansion continues to be one of the most visited landmarks in the city, thanks to its historical architecture, lush gardens, and traces of Atatürk's visits to Trabzon. Following extensive restoration work that began in 2022, the mansion was reopened to visitors in 2023, the 100th anniversary of the Republic. This aimed to preserve both the architectural features of the building and the memory of Atatürk for future generations.
What makes Atatürk Mansion special is not only its magnificent architecture and location surrounded by natural beauty, but also the fact that it hosted a significant moment in the history of the Republic. Therefore, as an important part of Trabzon's historical identity, the mansion offers visitors a meaningful journey from the past to the present.
