Eynesil Castle

Located approximately 2 kilometers east of the town center of Eynesil in Giresun, on a rocky peninsula on the Black Sea coast, Eynesil Castle is one of the region's remarkable historical structures. Its location on natural cliffs extending towards the sea gives the castle both a defensive advantage and an impressive appearance. Today, the castle is an important cultural tourism point, attracting visitors who want to see historical ruins alongside a sea view. There is no definitive information in academic sources regarding the exact construction date and builder of the castle. However, current sources indicate that the structure dates back to the Roman period. The castle's location on the coast and its naturally advantageous defensive structure suggest that it may have played an important role in the past in terms of regional security and control of maritime transport. Therefore, Eynesil Castle holds a special place among the historical defensive structures on the Black Sea coast. Architecturally, the castle consists of two sections running in a north-south direction. A wall extending east-west through the middle divides the castle into two separate sections. This wall has an opening of approximately two meters providing access to the section facing the sea. The walls, adapting to the natural structure of the peninsula, progress in a shape that is sometimes angular and sometimes curved. Thus, the castle has a defensive structure that integrates with the rocky terrain on which it is located. Ancient sources mention a water cistern and a church measuring approximately 6 x 7 meters within the castle. However, today no significant remains of these structures are visible. This indicates that the castle underwent changes in different periods throughout history and that some parts disappeared over time. Eynesil Castle was registered as an immovable cultural heritage site in 1978, and the boundaries of its protection area were determined in 1994. As a result of the work carried out at the castle, a partial restoration was completed in 2001, and the structure was arranged in a way that preserves its historical appearance as much as possible. Today, Eynesil Castle attracts attention not only with its historical past but also with its location on the Black Sea coast and its natural environment. Rising on a rocky peninsula, the castle offers visitors the opportunity to both learn about the historical defensive architecture of the region and admire the natural beauty of the Black Sea. The castle, an important stop along the way in Eynesil, is a beautiful example of Giresun's rich historical heritage stretching along the coast.
