Giresun Castle, one of the iconic structures of Giresun, is located in the city center, on the highest point of the peninsula extending towards the sea. Its location allows it to overlook both the sea and a large part of the city, making it a strategically important defensive point throughout history. Today, with its historical texture, natural beauty, and panoramic views of the city, it is one of the most visited places in Giresun. While the exact date of the castle's founding is unknown, the prevailing view is that it was built in the 2nd century BC during the reign of King Farnakes I of Pontus. However, archaeological findings indicate that the history of settlement in the region extends to earlier periods. In ancient sources, Giresun Castle was referred to as the "Bronze-Walled Castle" due to its strong walls. Having been under the rule of different civilizations over time, the castle is therefore a multi-layered historical site bearing traces of various periods. The castle generally consists of two parts: an inner castle and an outer castle. Some sections of the walls surrounding the peninsula have survived to the present day, while other parts have been destroyed over time. The walls, constructed from large stone blocks, merge with natural and steep cliffs in places, forming a strong defensive system. Within the inner citadel, besides palace ruins, there are cisterns, wells, and traces of various structures, while observation posts and rock-carved spaces can be seen at different points within the castle. One of the elements that completes the historical fabric of the castle is the rock-carved chambers and cave-like areas. Niches, seating platforms, and traces of frescoes have been identified in some sections. These remains show that the area was not only used for military purposes but also for various other uses in different periods. The wall and building remains visible today offer visitors important clues about Giresun's past settlement and defense system. In addition to its historical importance, Giresun Castle's natural location is another feature that makes it special. Its elevated position overlooking the city offers the opportunity to view the Black Sea and the urban fabric of Giresun from the same point. Today, the castle is organized as an area used for walking, resting, and sightseeing. Within the castle walls lies the memorial tomb of Topal Osman Ağa, one of the important figures of the Turkish War of Independence. Today, Giresun Castle is an important cultural and tourist area that combines historical ruins with natural beauty. For visitors to the city, it's not only an opportunity to see a castle structure from the past, but also to experience Giresun's history, city views, and the natural beauty of the Black Sea all at once.
