Çınarlar Mosque

Located in the Çınarlar neighborhood of Giresun city center, the Çınarlar Mosque is one of the city's important historical places of worship dating from the 19th century to the present day. Construction began in 1888, and the mosque was opened for worship in 1896. It is stated that Hacı Vehbizâde Ali Ağa spearheaded its construction. Due to its historical and architectural value, the Çınarlar Mosque was registered as a cultural heritage site requiring protection in 1986. The mosque is designed with a longitudinal rectangular plan and is constructed using stone. While rough and cut stone are used in the walls, more elaborate stonework is seen around the doors and windows. On the north side of the building, there is a three-sectioned last prayer area supported by two stone columns. This section with rounded arches is one of the most striking architectural elements in the mosque's exterior. The lower row of rectangular windows and the upper row of pointed arched windows on the facades give the building a balanced and simple appearance. One of the significant turning points in the history of the Çınarlar Mosque was the earthquake of 1939. As a result of the earthquake, the mosque's original dome collapsed, and the structure was later redesigned with a different roof. It is known that the mosque underwent various repairs in subsequent years, with a comprehensive restoration carried out in 2015-2016. During this restoration, the stone surfaces of the building were uncovered, the interior plasterwork was renewed, work was done on the wooden ceilings and floors, and the minaret and facade were cleaned. The interior of the mosque features traditional elements such as the mihrab, minbar, and women's section. The stone mihrab, with its small columns on either side and its craftsmanship, is noteworthy, while the wooden minbar and pulpit have a simpler design. Throughout the structure, stonework, arched openings, and architectural proportions are emphasized rather than ornate decorations. This simple design gives the Çınarlar Mosque a unique and dignified character. Today, the Çınarlar Mosque, open for worship, continues to exist as one of the important structures reflecting Giresun's cultural heritage with its historical past, original stone architecture, and the changes it has undergone. One of the things that makes the mosque special among the historical structures in the city center is that, despite its nearly century and a half of history, it has maintained its function within daily life.
