National Garden

Located in the Sultan Selim neighborhood of Giresun city center, the Historical People's Garden is one of the city's important green spaces that has survived from the past to the present. Used today as a tranquil resting and strolling area, the garden is also one of the special places that allows one to closely experience Giresun's historical urban fabric. The structure was registered as a cultural heritage site in 1986. The garden's history dates back to 1900. It is stated that it was established by the then-district governor Münir Ziya and the mayor Kaptan Yorgi Pasha, in memory of former governors Kadri Bey and Sırrı Pasha, and named "Memleket Bahçesi" (Homeland Garden). With this feature, the garden stands out as one of the important public spaces created in Giresun during the last years of the Ottoman period. One of the most striking parts of the Historical People's Garden is its monumental entrance gate made of carved stones. The fountains on either side of the gate also complement the garden's historical character. These sections, made of cut andesite stone, showcase stonework as well as various decorations reflecting the aesthetic understanding of the period. The inscriptions at the entrance provide important information about the garden's purpose and history. The terraced area on the north side of the garden offers visitors the opportunity to observe the surroundings and relax, while the remains of the Giresun Castle walls are located behind this area. Thus, the park integrates not only its natural and green landscape but also Giresun's historical defensive structures. The monumental trees and various plants within the garden also contribute to its unique atmosphere. Today, the Historical National Garden, easily accessible from the city center, is one of Giresun's important destinations for those who want to see history, architecture, and green spaces together. While visiting, it is possible to see not only a park from the past but also traces of Giresun's urbanization and social life history spanning over a century.
