Located in the Kapu neighborhood of Giresun city center, the Kapu Mosque is an important part of the city's historical and cultural identity. The area where the mosque is situated was historically a crucial point in Giresun's city center, providing access to the castle. It is said that the mosque's name, "Kapu Mosque," was adopted by the public due to its proximity to the castle entrance. The mosque's history dates back to the Ottoman period. It is believed to have been originally built in 1593 as a wooden structure by Governor Seyyid Mehmet Pasha, undergoing various repairs over time, and the current structure was rebuilt in 1896 by Karamustafazâde Mahmut Efendi. Therefore, the structure seen today particularly reflects the characteristics of 19th-century Ottoman architecture. The use of cut stone in the architecture of the Kapu Mosque is noteworthy. The square-plan, single-domed building's facades are enlivened with niches and windows created using stonework. The main entrance, with its fluted columns and ornamentation on either side, is one of the most striking features of the building. The single-balcony stone minaret rising from the northwest corner of the mosque also presents a harmonious appearance with the main structure. Inside the mosque, vegetal decorations reflecting the artistic sensibilities of the 19th century are visible. The mihrab, which combines cut stone and plasterwork, is one of the striking elements within the building. The decorations inside the building, which appears simpler from the outside, also give visitors an idea of the aesthetic sensibilities of the period. Kapu Mosque is more than just a place of worship; it is also important because it carries traces of Giresun's urbanization process and its past social life. The fact that the settlement area that developed around the mosque over time is called Kapu Neighborhood also shows the historical influence of the building on the region. Easily accessible from the city center today, the mosque continues to exist as one of Giresun's important historical structures that have survived from the past to the present.
