Located in the Kapu neighborhood of Giresun city center, the mausoleum is believed by the public to be built over the grave of Seyyid Vakkas, one of the frontier commanders of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. It is said that Seyyid Vakkas was martyred during the conquest of Giresun and buried in the place where the mausoleum stands today.
The mausoleum we see today was built in 1888 by Mehmet Ali Bey from Rize, replacing a previously existing wooden shrine. Constructed of cut stone, its octagonal body and dome make it a striking example of 19th-century Ottoman architecture.
The most well-known legend about the mausoleum is the folk tale that Seyyid Vakkas continued his struggle despite being beheaded in battle and was buried where he fell as a martyr. Therefore, Seyyid Vakkas is remembered in Giresun as an important historical figure synonymous with heroism and self-sacrifice.
This small but significant structure, preserved within the historical fabric of the city, is an important stop for visitors who want to get to know Giresun's past and the cultural memory passed down by its people for centuries.
