Kızılkoyun Necropolis

Kızılkoyun Necropolis is an important ancient burial site located in the Haleplibahçe area of Şanlıurfa, close to the Archaeology Museum. Dating back about two thousand years, the necropolis provides valuable information about the burial traditions of Şanlıurfa, known in ancient times as Edessa, during the Roman and Early Byzantine periods. The site contains many rock-cut tombs carved into limestone. Some of these tombs feature reliefs, mosaics, and Syriac inscriptions. Today, Kızılkoyun Necropolis is open to visitors with arranged walking paths and special lighting. It offers a unique opportunity to discover the cultural and artistic world of ancient Edessa. With its impressive atmosphere, especially in the evening, it is one of the archaeological sites worth visiting to better understand the many layers of Şanlıurfa's history.
