Myndos Ancient City

At the western tip of the Bodrum Peninsula, in the area known today as Gümüşlük, lies a city frequently mentioned by ancient writers: Myndos, founded by the Carian King Mausolus. Established by the sea, this ancient city witnessed many significant historical events and has survived to the present day, concealing its traces beneath the deep waters and the soil.

Visible above ground are a Byzantine era church, sections of fortification walls, and remnants of the so called "Leleg wall," alongside breakwater and tower ruins submerged in the sea. Yet, the true treasure of Myndos is reserved for the observant eye; partially buried columns, traces of mosaics, and ceramic fragments may appear at almost every step.

The history of Myndos bears the marks of great empires and commanders. Having passed into the hands of Alexander’s generals following the defeat of the Persian commander Orontobates in 333 BC, the city came under Ptolemaic rule in the 3rd century. Myndos gained its independence in 197 BC and acquired the capacity to mint its own coins. The city also served as the headquarters for Brutus and Cassius Caesar's assassins in 44 BC, playing a role in one of history's most dramatic moments.

Renowned for wine production in antiquity, Myndos eventually lost its former glory, continuing its existence as a modest city during the Roman Imperial period. Today, visitors diving into the azure waters of Gümüşlük may well be swimming over a civilization that dates back millennia without even realizing it.
