Pedasa Antique City

High above the Konacık neighborhood, nestled among the pine scented hills of Bodrum, lies a city that has defied the passage of time: Pedasa. Known today as Gökçeler, this site holds the distinction of being the only Lelegian settlement to have survived remarkably intact to the present day. Easily accessible, Pedasa greets visitors with traces of its history even before they reach the city itself.

Domed tombs built using the dry stone technique resembling gümbet structures serve as the first sign that one is approaching Pedasa. Constructed from local stone using the corbelling method, these tombs consist of a single domed chamber accessed via a small entrance. Artifacts recovered from these tombs excavated by Italian archaeologists between 1919 and 1921 date back to the Geometric period.

Pedasa was the largest and most significant of the eight cities established by the Leleges on the Bodrum Peninsula; while it stood out as a powerful regional force during the 6th and 5th centuries BC, its expansion ceased entirely as the Common Era approached. According to the historian Herodotus, the people of Pedasa were the only group in Caria to resist the Persians a resistance mounted immediately following the fall of Sardis, the Lydian capital, in 546 BC.

The legendary aspect of Pedasa is equally striking: Herodotus recounts that whenever disaster loomed over the city or its neighbors, the priestess of the Temple of Athena in Pedasa would miraculously grow a beard. This extraordinary event is recorded as having occurred three times in history; it is said that the priestess grew a beard again following the Persian invasion.

Today, one can still encounter shepherds and grazing livestock in the area a testament to the untouched atmosphere of Pedasa, far removed from the urban sprawl of modern Bodrum. For those wishing to trace the legacies of both the Leleg civilization and the Carian resistance at their own pace, Pedasa remains one of Bodrum’s most significant sites.
