The Koskarlı Cave Archaeological Excavation Site, located near Çayırbağı in the Düzköy district, is a significant archaeological site that sheds light on Trabzon’s prehistoric past. Surface surveys conducted in 2019 yielded chipped stone tools, cores, and production waste made of flint and obsidian. These findings indicate that human activity in the region dates back to the Epi-Paleolithic period, approximately 20,000 to 10,000 years ago.
Systematic archaeological excavations were initiated at the site in 2024 under the direction of the Trabzon Museum Directorate. Offering crucial insights into the prehistory of the Eastern Black Sea region, Koskarlı Cave stands out as a valuable destination; through ongoing research, it pushes back the timeline of Trabzon’s known history to much earlier eras.
