Şanlıurfa Grand Mosque

Şanlıurfa Grand Mosque is one of the city’s oldest and most important historic places of worship. Located in the city center, it is believed to have been built in the 12th century on the site of an earlier church known as the Red Church, with some architectural elements of the former structure still preserved.

The mosque is especially notable for its fourteen pointed arches and its historic bell tower, which was later converted into a minaret. A clock was added to the tower during the Republican period, giving it an additional role as a city clock tower. The mosque offers visitors a remarkable glimpse into Şanlıurfa’s layered religious and architectural history.
