Hagia Sophia Bell Tower

Now I would like to introduce you to the Hagia Sophia Bell Tower, located just west of the historical Hagia Sophia in the Ortahisar district of Trabzon. The tower, dated to 1427 in sources, was built separately from the Hagia Sophia Church. The building, which has a square plan and was built using cut stone and rubble stone, was used as a bell tower in the past and served as a minaret for a while after Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque.

One of the most striking features of the tower is the chapel on the upper floor decorated with frescoes dated 1443. Frescoes depicting religious scenes on the walls increase the historical and artistic value of the building. When evaluated together with the Hagia Sophia Mosque, the Hagia Sophia Bell Tower is one of the important historical structures that reflect the different periods and cultures of Trabzon.
