I would now like to introduce you to the Hagia Sophia Mosque, one of Trabzon’s most significant historical structures. Built in the 13th century during the reign of Manuel I Komnenos of the Empire of Trabzon, the building was converted into a mosque following the conquest of the city; it also served as a museum at various times and has been functioning as a mosque once again since 2013.
A notable example of Late Byzantine architecture, the Hagia Sophia stands out for its high dome, stonework, frescoes, and—in particular—the ornamentation on its southern façade. Traces of Seljuk stonework, alongside Byzantine art, can be observed in both the interior and exterior sections of the structure. A place where history, architecture, and art converge, the Hagia Sophia Mosque is a key destination for cultural and faith tourism that visitors to Trabzon should not miss.
