Sedir Island (Kedrai)

Sedir Island is a small island located within the Gulf of Gökova, part of Marmaris, and it contains the ruins of the ancient city of Cedrae dating from the Roman period. The island's best-known feature is that the fine white sand beach along its shore is known as "Cleopatra's Beach"; a popular legend holds that this sand was brought by ship from North Africa to impress her lover during Egyptian Queen Cleopatra's visit to Marcus Antonius. The island's ancient ruins include a theater, city walls, and traces of a sacred area. Beyond its legendary past, the island is also one of the most visited spots in the Gulf of Gökova for its natural beauty. Access to Sedir Island is by land to Çamlık Pier followed by small boats, or directly via boat tours departing from Marmaris. The area is protected in order to preserve its natural and archaeological value, and beach entry is kept limited to protect the amount of sand. With both its historical fabric and its legendary story, Sedir Island continues to be one of the most distinctive boat tour stops in the Marmaris region.
